Preparing for Prelaunch
with our theory of change
Dear friends of the Climate Majority project,
We’d like to remind you that our online pre-launch will take place on May 30 at 19:00-20:00 BST. Places are filling up – you can reserve yours here, and do share the link with those who you think would be interested.
Our work begins with calling time on the decades-long climate story where there’s always one last chance to fix things - a story that helps prevent mass concern from becoming mass action. At our pre-launch call we’ll ask you to join us in this effort.
We’ll offer a high level summary of what we’ve been up to in the last few months, including an official name and identity change. Then we’ll discuss how you can take part in a campaign that will run until our official launch in late June and beyond.
As well as important updates on our work and new identity, we’ll introduce a launch campaign that we invite you to be a part of. We need to say togetherr:
Time’s up: we’re past final warnings on climate change. A rising majority of the public, far beyond the radical activist sphere, is now rightly concerned. And far from curling up in despair, many of those people are already getting to work. The CMP works to expand and catalyse their efforts toward systems change, and help this mass movement in-waiting to become aware of itself.
Our Theory of Change
We believe that an approach to addressing the climate crisis should be as simple as possible, but no simpler. Neither top-down nor grassroots approaches are sufficient on their own. Every institution, industry and segment of society can and must play its part, and while we may highlight directions and methods that can help people to leverage their own power, ultimately every unique solution must emerge from its people and context. Our theory of change reflects certain complexities because we believe that is the reality of how things work. True transformation takes effort and commitment throughout society.
At the core of this theory of change are our four interdependent strands: These strands require and reinforce one another at every level:
Narrative Shift
Shifting climate conversations further towards truthfulness, regarding both the depth of challenges faced and emerging responses. Thus fostering the motivation and understanding needed to break the inertia discussed above.Collective Resilience
Cultivating the community and resources that can underpin mutual support through inevitably difficult experiences and emotions, and the belonging, co-concern and shared endeavour that can take us from despair to determination.Tangible Actions
Pragmatic and well thought-out ways that people together can make specific changes, turning concern into meaningful climate action.Building Shared Understanding
An ongoing, inclusive, agenda-setting conversation lays the groundwork for tomorrow’s tangible actions, and surveys the shifting social landscape. In particular, people involved in mainstream climate action need shared understanding of how their personal (local) actions play a role in global efforts by millions - giving individuals confidence that their efforts are not wasted.
If you would like to read the Theory of Change in more detail, you can find the full document here. One of the best you can help the Climate Majority form is to engage with, contribute to, and share the conversation.
